What Should I Write About?

Are you planning to write a new book but you don't know what to write about? This can be a difficult decision, even if you're already a published author. It seems there are so many things to say yet you have to be sure someone else hasn't already said it. In addition, if they have, you need to be sure you can say it better.

You could have an idea floating around in your head for the next bestseller and not even know it yet. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best ideas, as soon as you determine how to spin them but, what if you do not have any ideas.

Here are some things you can do to get ideas on what to write about:

•  Determine who you are writing for

•  Determine why you are writing

•  Zero in on your target market and connect with them so you know what it is they want to read about

•  Look at the world around you- what types of things are happening in society that could lend themselves to a book?

•  Look at your own life- consider your own experiences, or even an autobiography

•  Consider your family- could you do a biography or a family historical review?

If you are a seasoned writer just looking for a new idea, any of these tips and ideas might help. If you are a business professional looking to publish a book to give you more credibility in the industry then you will want to write your book on something related to your area niche.

Consider these points:

  1. What do you know about your niche or industry that others would not know?
  2. What knowledge of value do you have to share with others?
  3. How can you possibly help others through your book?
  4. Do you have something special, humorous or interesting to tell?
  5. Can your book better the industry in some way?

By now you are probably already getting some ideas for what to write about. We suggest you jot these ideas down and then keep a running tally of all the ideas you have. If they don't lend themselves to your current book, they could come to life in the future. A good idea is sometimes like a dream that you forget upon wakening; if you don't write it down, it could be lost forever.

Always keep pen and paper handy, or another popular choice is index cards as they are easy to carry and to organize. Jot down any ideas. When you have free time or find yourself waiting in public, observe the people and things around you and write this down. It can all make its way into a chapter of your next book.

Remember that once you have your book ready to go, hiring a representative to help you in your efforts at publishing the book can be well worth the cost and effort. A representative can speed along the process and help you make more money in the long run. An investment pays for itself in time.
