Connecting with your target market

When trying to find a book publishing company, it's important to connect with your target market. It's not enough to just know who they are; you also have to be able to connect with them on a personal level so that you can properly market to the right people. This is imperative to sending a book proposal and important to help you know which book publishers are capable of helping you.

You will be asked to explain your target market but this isn't the only reason why you want to know who they are. It's important to connect with them if you want your book to be successful. You need to know who your readers are, know what it feels like to be them for a day and know what they are truly looking for in a book. You have to be able to get into their shoes for a moment and see from their perspective. Only then will you be able to connect with them.

You need to be able to answer questions like:

  1. Who are they?
  2. What do they want to read?
  3. Why would they be looking for my book?
  4. When would they be looking for my book?
  5. What can my book do for them?
  6. What benefit do I have to offer the target market?
  7. How will I stand out against the competition?

Here are some ways you can connect with your target market:

•  Meet them online, communicate on a blog or forum

•  Blog with them on their favorite blogsites and get to know them

•  Participate in forums with the topics that your target market enjoys

•  Podcast with them

•  Create a Myspace page and/or group and network with them

•  Join clubs related to your book topic and target market

When trying to connect with your target market, put yourself in the shoes of your target. Think about what you would want if it were you. Think about what it would take to make you want to purchase a book. When you truly connect with your target, you will be able to answer these questions and more.

Market research is imperative to the successful sale of a book. You have to know who you are trying to market to before you can reach them. One problem that people have with finding their target market is in not being able to narrow it down enough. It's easy to look at a wide area of people who fit your profile and want to market to as many people as possible but to really connect with your target market, you will have to narrow it down as much as possible.

Here are some ideas to help you reach out to your target market:

•  Use word of mouth to meet interested people

•  Find writer's associations that match your interests

•  Join clubs

Sometimes hiring a representative to help you with the process of selling your book can help speed your efforts and help you make more money in the long run. It's well worth the investment to involve an expert, especially if this is your first book.
