Book Distribution
Book distribution involves getting a book to those who will be interested in buying or selling it. That means you must see that it gets on the shelves in the bookstores or other means that will ensure it reaches those who will be in a position to buy or sell the book. Unless you are able to distribute your book it will not arrive in the hands of those who may be interested in buying or selling it.
Book distribution doesn't always have to mean physically distributing it but rather providing a means for it to arrive in the hands of the reader. That can mean through direct sales (person to person or door to door), online, book fairs, libraries or any other means that assures your book arrives in the hands of those who are interested in reading it. Successful marketing will guarantee that you reach those who are interested in distributing your book in one of the methods available.
Of course, it's important to understand that book distribution starts from the time your manuscript is accepted for publishing. The publisher does not wait until your book is ready to arrive on the shelves of bookstores, libraries or online book sellers before they begin releasing information about it. Certainly the actual distribution does not occur until after the book is printed, but pre-release notifications occur long before the book is ready for release. In fact, publishers will provide a certain number of review copies free to those who are willing to read the book and provide a review of it prior to its release.
Selling a book goes through several stages beginning with the approval of the manuscript, marketing, pre-release distribution and final release and distribution. It is essential to make certain none of these steps is missed or it will affect the success of your book. Marketing is the mostimportant aspect of selling your book and leads to the book's distribution to the target audience. Marketing is essential but distribution is the “bread and butter” of the entire process. Without distribution no one will see your book and thus will not have the opportunity to read it.
